2010-2011 LYH HOCKEY TRYOUT PROCESS
 
1). List of Drills for Mite, Girls and Squirt Level
  
Each player does the drill two times.
 
Sprint Pivot and Shoot – Players on boards in corner, sprint to cone at far blue line, pivot and skate backwards to cone at near blue line, pivot, sprint to the same side opposite corner of the ice. Move the line to the other side, flip cones, and repeat drill.
Stickhandle and Shoot – From corner, carry puck around cones and shoot on goal. Drill will be repeated from other end of ice.  
Stickhandle Tight Turns and Shoot – Same set up as above, but cones are wider, so player must tight turn around cones with puck, drive to front of net, then shoot on goalie.
4 on 4 and 5 on 5 full ice games- with one minute shifts.
  
2.)  List of Drills for Pee Wee and Bantam Level
 
Each player does the drill two times.
 
Sprint Pivot and Shoot – Players on boards in corner, sprint to cone at far blue line, pivot and skate backwards to cone at near blue line, pivot, sprint to puck on blue line and shoot no deeper than top of circles. Follow-up shot for rebound.  Move the line to the other side of cone and repeat drill.
Stickhandle and Shoot – From corner, carry puck straight at cones, and deke inside of cone. Repeat at each cone, then shoot on goalie. Drill will be repeated to deke outside of cones, as well.
Stickhandle Tight Turns and Shoot – Same set up as above, but cones are wider, so player must tight turn around cones with puck, drive to front of net, then shoot on goalie.
4 on 4 and 5 on 5 full ice games- with one minute shifts. Controlled contact allowed, but no reckless checking.
Goalie skills will be determined by third party evaluator.

4.) Tryout Forms:
  • Coaches Evaluation & Player Rank - EOY Evaluations
To be filled out by ALL Head and Assistant Coaches at year-end.
 
  • Game and Skill Evaluation Forms
To be completed by third party evaluators in two separate sessions.
 
5.) Process:
  • Players register and pay tryout deposit, receive pinney/number.
  • Players will be lined-up for skills by pinney numbers and colors.
  • Players attend a maximum of two tryout sessions per level: Each session will consist of skills and games.
  • Players will be chosen based on skill level and not position.
  • Each LYH coach MUST practice the tryout skills before the tryout.
  • Players are judged by third party evaluation team.
  • Data is written and consolidated on Game and Skill Evaluation Forms by third party evaluators.
  • Players are sorted from highest to lowest total scores from tryout data.
  • Head coaches send EOY Player Evaluations after consulting with Asst. Coaches.
  • Teams are chosen based upon third party evaluator rankings and input from the coaches EOY evaluations and rankings.
  • If two players from the same team are trying out for the same age group and their scores are deemed equal by the third party evaluators, the EOY coaching evaluations will break any ties.
  • If a player misses tryouts due to a medical issue and is registered for the program, the coaches EOY evaluation will be used to determine the player’s team.
  • If a player misses a session and is deemed a “bubble” player and is being compared to a player who has attend both sessions, the player who attended both session will be placed using the highest score from their tryouts for comparison.
  • More weight will be given to second year players if the scores are deemed close by the tryout committee.
  • Players will not be asked back to the second tryout if the third party evaluator has determined through the rankings, that they have earned their roster position on the “A” team.
  • All rankings will be confidential, unless a parent requests to know where their child was ranked on his or her team.
 
6.) Roles:
  • Coaching Director is responsible for coordinating the tryout process.
  • Tryout committee is made-up from members of the LYH Board of Directors.
  • Third party evaluators will be in the stands.
  • LYH Coaches will be assigned a skill station to manage.
  • Registrar will participate at each tryout session checking in participants.
  • Any changes to the Tryout process must be voted on by the Board.
  • LYH board members must participate in overseeing at least one tryout sessions.  A list will be sent out once the ice time is confirmed.
  • Pinney colors may changefor the second tryout based on the scores from the third party evaluator to make the games competitive.
  • Third party evaluator will have the ability to ask the bench coaches to put certain players on the ice or change the format of the game. 
 
7.) Tryout Details:
            Mites:
3 tryout dates:  Sessions will consist of skills and  4x4 and 5x5 full ice games.
 
Evaluators will switch clipboards in order to evaluate all the players.
 
Squirts:
2 tryout dates:  Sessions will consist of skills and  4x4 and 5x5 full ice games.
 
Evaluators will switch clipboards in order to evaluate all the players.
 
PeeWees:
             2 tryout dates:  Sessions will consist of skills and games
            Games will be 4x4 and 5x5 full-ice.
 
Bantams:
             2 tryout dates:  Sessions will consist of skills and games
            Game will be 4x4 and 5x5 full-ice.

Girls:
            2 tryout dates:  Sessions will consist of skills and games. 
            Game will be 4X4 and 5X5 full ice.
